The Production Manager is the chief coordinator and leader of production operations for Opera Maine’s mainstage production of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, running the last week of July 2025 in Portland, ME. They oversee and manage all aspects of the production, including rehearsal spaces, scenic, prop, and costume shop facilities. They also advise the Artistic Department and Executive Director on technical and general production needs.
The Production Manager is contracted part-time leading up to the production and full-time during rehearsals and performances. Artists arrive for rehearsals on July 2, 2025. Load-in to Merrill Auditorium begins July 14. Outside of the rehearsal/performance period, the Production Manager completes tasks remotely on a part-time, as-needed basis.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervise all production staff and contractors, including but not limited to technical staff, audio visual designers and engineers, electricians, carpenters, production assistants, wardrobe personnel, props, running crew, interns, and additional personnel as required.
- Assist the Executive Director in hiring the production staff.
- Guide directors and design teams through the design process to ensure timely completion of all designs. Assess feasibility of execution within time, budget, and personnel constraints in collaboration with technical staff.
- Develop and administer production calendars and design deadlines in collaboration with the Artistic Director, Stage Manager, and Executive Director. Determine load-in and tech schedules, manage resource calendars for shared facilities, and schedule design and production meetings.
- Oversee technical preparations in coordination with the Technical Director, including evaluating and arranging for necessary equipment and repairs.
- Oversee and coordinate production needs across departments, including Lighting, Costume, Scenic, Wigs/Makeup, and Audio Design.
- Manage venue logistics, including load-in and restore for performance, concert, and rehearsal venues. Act as primary liaison with venue management on production-related issues.
- Assist with orchestra setup for rehearsals and performances, including transportation of equipment and materials.
- Support production as needed with hands-on projects, including special effects, projections, audiovisual needs, and stage work.
- Coordinate post-season strike and storage needs.
- Serve as Opera Maine’s Safety Officer, ensuring compliance with OSHA, ADA, and Fire Code regulations. Address safety hazards, enforce safety protocols, and educate employees on emergency procedures.
- Act as liaison with IATSE Local 114, maintaining a strong working relationship and negotiating production budgets and hours as needed.
- Manage truck rentals and transportation of equipment and supplies.
- Facilitate communication between production departments, including organizing production meetings.
- Oversee and execute basic sound and AV needs for rehearsals and performances.
- Manage and reconcile production budgets, assisting the Executive and Artistic Directors in identifying cost-saving measures.
- Conduct a post-mortem review of the production process.
- Advise on year-round production storage needs.
- Participate in company planning with full-time staff.
- Assist in budget preparation for technical and production areas.
- Perform other production-related duties as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS AND DESIRED SKILLS:
- 3+ years of experience as a Production Manager in professional opera and/or theater.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and internet-based file sharing.
- Problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively to overcome challenges.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work well under pressure with diverse personalities.
- Hands-on approach and willingness to assist as needed.
- Understanding of the artistic process, with excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and diplomacy skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects efficiently.
- Technical knowledge of safe stage procedures and safety standards.
- Extensive knowledge of theater techniques and production processes.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work long hours, nights, and weekends in July, especially from load-in through load-out.
- Able to perform extensive standing, walking, climbing, and lifting. This position requires good endurance, stamina, and strength.
